The challenge
In May 2026, a high-mortality cluster in Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, was confirmed as Bundibugyo virus disease. On 15 May the DRC declared its 17th Ebola outbreak and Uganda reported an imported case. WHO determined a public health emergency of international concern on 17 May.
Transmission in the DRC grew beyond the first province. Uganda later closed its outbreak after a limited number of imported and contact-linked cases. In October 2026 Kenya reported an imported cluster and Nigeria an imported case in Abuja.
The notices that described this event did not always agree with each other. A map that picked one number and dropped the rest would be easier to read and harder to trust.
What we did
The dashboard is a public web application. It has views for the outbreak overview, a timeline, cases, contacts, map layers, border measures, and sources. Data are modelled as a property graph of cases, contacts, follow-up, and provenance.
A separate curation application reviews claims. Production reads use human-approved claims from official releases and news. Automated extraction does not publish on its own. When two sources assert incompatible values, both claims stay linked until a curator resolves them.
The public map is at https://2026bdbv.diaphana.io/app . The source code is at https://github.com/diaphana-io/2026bdbv-dashboard .
The account above follows the project’s own description and two WHO Disease Outbreak News items: DON602 (Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda) and DON622 (23 October 2026, adding Kenya and Nigeria).

Results
- Public map of the 2026 Bundibugyo virus outbreak
- Cases, contacts, timeline, and border measures in one application
- Sources remain attached to the claims drawn from them
- Unresolved contradictions stay visible on the map
- Source code published on GitHub
